Dubrovnik, Croatia

so after all of my missteps, i am finally in croatia. and it is pretty freaking gorgeous! i am in dubrovnik, the very south end of the country. i got in this morning after a 16 hour bus ride. 16 hour bus rides = not the most fun of my life. but i did meet some pretty hilarious croatian dudes who made the time go faster.
everyone that i talked to before coming to dubrovnik told me that it was a waste of time this time of year and that nothing is going on. even when i was getting on the bus last night, the driver looked at me with this questioning look and said, "Dubrovnik???" i was picturing a dead panama city, florida, but this is much better. so far i have been pleasantly surprised. it is a gorgeous beach town, the weather is amazing, and i have been walking around in circles the last few hours getting my bearings.

when we arrived in the city, before we had officially reached the bus stop, this man got on and immediately walked back to me and started bargaining with me about staying at his home. he was a friend of the bus driver, and i think this is fairly common. i was so bewildered - a night of not sleeping, a language barrier, and delight at this cute little man made me commit to staying with his family.
he and his wife are probably in their late 70s. they had 2 cute grandkids running around the house, and they made me coffee and juice as soon as i got there. it wasn't exactly what i was planning on doing, but, once again, it goes along with my theme of being on my own and not having fellow travelers to distract me. plus, it is outside the city center, so it is nice to walk into the city, i think.

i will probably be here in dubrovnik for a few days. mostly walking around in circles. i am going to try and blog more complete blogs, but this internet place is expensive.

Glad to hear your trip is going well. I'm anticipating a future post about how you stayed with this very nice Vladimir Putin man at some presidential palace thingy ;-)
