I"m in Austin, traveling again.
It's a week full of Texas.
I flew with Angela into Dallas on Friday night for Showdown practice all weekend in Dallas.
Then drove with the girls from Austin to Austin to spend the week in Austin.
I'll drive with them to Houston for practice this weekend, and then I'll fly home with Angela (who flew back to Atlanta Sunday evening and is flying back to Houston on Friday) on Sunday evening.
Big week.
I'm seeing lots of Texas.
Texas is big.
My travel habits, even though I am very aware of them now, still make me laugh a lot and get a bit frustrated with myself at times.
I got into Austin on Sunday evening, came straight to Tank, Cara, and Holly's house for some yummy leftover wedding food (just eating my 4th meal in 3 days from that leftover wedding food), and crashed here Sunday night. Yesterday I had big plans to get up and get to a coffee shop to work for a few hours before checking out Austin. It still hasn't happened.
My "adventure" for yesterday was walking a little over a mile to the bank. A. I don't know that I have been whistled at or honked at as much in my life as I did on my 2 trips back and forth to the bank in the last 2 days. B. I almost died.
Not really, but I did manage to freak myself out.
I was talking to my grandma on the phone most of the way to the bank yesterday. I came to a very busy intersection, directly across from the bank. I waited for the light to change, but, just as it did, I paused on the sidewalk to try to figure out what my grandma was saying. Right then, a car came blazing through the red light (that had probably changed color at least 3 seconds earlier) and nailed a car that had started to pull out into the road because the driver had a green light. the car running the light smashed into the car and pushed it right into the crosswalk I would have been walking in. I don't think I would have actually been hit, but it was definitely enough to make me super weird and a little shaky on the insides.
So yeah - I just sort of sat there in shock, went to the ATM, got my money out, and then proceeded to leave my ATM card in the machine (the reason for me going back to the bank today and retrieving my card).
Later in the evening we drove to the park and did a workout in the sand at a volleyball court. It was pretty good. I was tired from the weekend, and my legs felt weak. But it felt good to run in sand a bit.
I finished off the evening with a boardgame night at Terry's house. It was supes fun - we played the board game version of Salad Bowl. While not nearly as hilarious as the actual salad bowl (particularly minus the hot tub), it was pretty wonderful to listen to Moose give clues. And Nat try to give clues.
I like the Austin frisbee scene. Since being here, I realized that I know A LOT of people here, and it has been fun to run into them at different moments (dinner on Sunday, board games last night).
Today is another day that started out with me full of intentions to do something really productive with my time - see Austin, at least get out of the house. Except for my trip to the bank, I have been fairly unsuccessful. Part of it is work - my sis is gone on vaca, so I need to be available more for work. Part of it is just me being lazy and feeling like, "If I am really social in the evenings, I need the mornings/afternoons for my own alone time. "
I have gotten way back into Army Wives. Embarrassing, amazing guilty pleasure of my life. It's pretty fantastic. So it's been fun to catch on Season 3 some this week.
But seriously - I THINK if I get decent sleep tonight (nothing planned except for some Showdown hotbox) I am planning on making myself get up tomorrow and get out of the house. It will help that I'll be at Slider and Kiran's place, and maybe they live slightly closer to downtown? (not that anything in far here - we're talking like 2 miles, with a bus system if I want to take it). So really - it's just me doing my travel thing. Hiding out a few days.
Showdown practice was super fun on Saturday and Sunday, but it was definitely an overload for me of meeting people, being social, and trying to figure out this team and how I fit on it. I forgot how exhausting all of the mental stuff can be (on top of the "I haven't really trained hard in 18 months" thing that is challenging physically. More on this topic later.
